The Season of Gathering. A Late Summer.
There is a particular moment at the end of summer when Dartmoor seems to take a breath.
The fields are the strangest colour, one we’ve never seen before due to the drought, the heat, golden and crisp underfoot. Hedgerows are heavy with berries. Seed heads sway where wildflowers once stood, and the evenings arrive just a little earlier, bringing that first hint that autumn is waiting patiently in the wings.
It is the season of gathering.
For generations, late summer and early autumn have been a time of harvest across Devon. A time to gather what the land has grown, to preserve what we can and, traditionally, to give thanks for the abundance of the season before the darker months begin.
At The Book Nook Dartmoor, we love this time of year.
Perhaps it is because our little cabin sits so closely within the rhythm of the farm and the landscape around it. Or perhaps it is because, in a world that can often feel relentlessly fast, there is something wonderfully reassuring about the changing of the seasons.
Nature does not rush.
And neither, we think, should we.
A Different Kind of Harvest
When we think about harvest, it is easy to picture overflowing baskets of apples, golden fields and armfuls of vegetables.
But here, our idea of abundance stretches a little further.
This year, we have watched young trees continue to establish themselves across the farm. We have seen wildflowers give way to seed heads, providing food and shelter for insects and birds. The ponds and scrapes have changed with the weather, and the hedgerows have become busy corridors of life. The squash patch is thriving, the onions are ready to plait, the courgettes are being turned into lasagnes ready for the winter months and the kitchen garden is providing the family with fresh produce.
There is something rather magical about learning to look at a landscape not simply for what we can take from it, but for what it can become.
The Book Nook was built with that idea very much in mind.
Created largely from reclaimed and repurposed materials, the cabin itself is a celebration of making, mending and imagining what something could become rather than simply throwing it away. An old tree felled by a storm eventually led us here — to a cabin tucked into the Devon countryside, behind a wardrobe door, waiting for its next chapter to begin.
It seems fitting, somehow, that the story continues to grow with the landscape around it.
The Joy of Seasonal Slowing Down
Late summer is one of our favourite times to stay on Dartmoor.
The busiest days of summer are beginning to fade, but there is still warmth in the sunshine. Walks feel quieter. The evenings are made for sitting outside with a book and a blanket, watching the light change across the hills.
And then, of course, there is the gentle excitement of autumn waiting just around the corner.
At The Book Nook, we like to think of this as the season for lingering.
For long breakfasts.
For muddy boots left by the door.
For discovering a second-hand book you didn’t know you needed.
For taking the scenic route home.
And for remembering that you don’t always have to fill every moment.
Sometimes the most memorable part of a holiday is simply having the space to notice things again.
